Definition of Terms

Corrections - The administration of custodial and selected non-custodial sentences of the courts. << Go back

Community Corrections - manage offenders in the community and are responsible for ensuring they comply with the conditions of the various court or parole orders. These may include participating in appropriate educational, community work, assessment and treatment programs, which are focused on rehabilitation while enabling offenders to make suitable reparation to the community. << Go back

Custodial - Where referring to sentence and most services, this means prison or prison-based.
Where referring to staff, it means trained, uniformed Prison Officers working in prisons. << Go back

Industries - Work for prisoners is an integral part of the prison's operations and is critical to a meaningful and structured day.  Industries provide prisoners with the opportunity to undertake training while they learn a trade and produce a variety of goods in a safe workplace environment.

Staff who work with the prisoners are referred to as ‘industries' staff, and are also trained as prison officers. The range of industries offered varies among individual prisons.<< Go back

Non Custodial - Where referring to sentences and most services, it means non-prison or non-prison based. For example, some offenders may be sentenced to community based orders, home detention or suspended sentences.
Where referring to staff, it means staff who are non-uniformed such as administrative or clinical staff. << Go back

Offender - An individual who has been found guilty of committing an offence. They may have been given a custodial (prison sentence) or non custodial penalty e.g. fine, community based order, suspended sentence, home detention. << Go back

Programs - A range of treatment services and courses which prisoners or offenders complete. For example, anger management, drug and alcohol rehabilitation courses etc. << Go back

Rehabilitation - Change of behaviour and actions. << Go back

Remand - Where a person is on remand, they have been charged with an offence and held in custody, but have not yet either been to Court or been sentenced.
A remand facility is one where remand prisoners are held, usually separated from sentenced prisoners. << Go back

Secondment - Transfer from your current role to a new position for a set period of time to complete a project or task. << Go back
