Corrections Victoria offers significant opportunities for registered and probationary psychologists, social workers and other allied health professionals. For probationary psychologists, it is possible to work to obtain their registration in a challenging and supportive environment.
Psychologists have the opportunity to work not only in multi-disciplinary teams within prison locations, but may also apply for opportunities in the many Community Correctional Services locations across the state. There is also a specialist team of psychologists you can apply to work with who work specifically with sex offenders.
Registered psychologists can also apply for senior psychologist positions, which involve supervising a team of psychologists at a location, or within a region.
Within Prison Services clinical services staff are required to do a variety of tasks including prisoner assessments, deliver individual and group therapy programs, and provide counselling.
It is also possible to apply for secondment opportunities to project teams working on topics such as health services, prisoner program development and educational services.
Administrative staff are able to work in a variety of areas within Corrections Victoria. Entry level staff are required in the business services fields of human resources, finance, executive services, stores and prisoner property.
There are a variety of career paths available to entry level prison officers. These staff have both the responsibility for the custodial management of prisoners, and often a high level of involvement in working with non custodial staff in the delivery of programs and services.
There are also a group of Prison Officers who are responsible for the supervision and training of prisoners while they learn a trade and produce a variety of goods in a safe workplace environment. These staff are referred to as Industries Officers or Supervisors, and have training and work experience in a specific trade. The range of industries offered varies among individual prisons.
